Publisher's Synopsis
Arising out of a sequence of events in the debate about an end to the political conflict in South Africa, the idea for this book was first germinated in July, 1987 in Dakar, when the editors participated in discussions between members of the ANC and a group of academics from South Africa. The book received further impetus in the press debate which followed that event. It was given its major substance at a symposium, entitled "Political Accord in South Africa - Problems and Prospects", convened by the Centre for Policy Studies in January 1988.;Analyses of the main contending forces and their ideologies highlight the intractable nature of the conflict. The book concludes with an assessment of the constraints and opportunities for a negotiated future for South Africa.
