Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from My First Book
My father died at the age of 63 in Earlington, Kentucky, where he had gone to take charge of a village school for his health. I was just eight years old when he died and left mother with six children to clothe and care for. Later in life, I went to Mississippi with my mother, where I enrolled as a student of Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College, a school for the colored male youths of Mississippi. I continued as a student for a few years until force of circum stances compelled me to start into the world for myself.
