The German vocabulary of sachs-villatte has been largely added to; new scientific terms, chemical formulae, and many other items which the intercourse of two great civilised nations brings forth as a regular annual crop, have been carefully gathered and garnered in. The system of small-type definitions and illustrations, which gives sachs-villatte the character of a bilingual Cyclopaedia, has been more fully developed. The German Etymology has been thoroughly overhauled in the light of the latest research. In the arrangement of word-groups, I have saved a great deal of space byjoining and drawing together members of the same family more closely than sachs-villatte had done. The notation for German pronunciation has remained almost unchanged.
Many, especially of the longer, articles have been remodelled and extended in conformity with the requirements of the English language and the rapid progress of modern lexico graphy. Still, on the whole, the German stock of sachs-villatte, with its unsurpassed method of grouping compounds, remains the German basis of the present work. In matters of German spelling and grammar, Duden's well-known dictionary has been my principal guide.
