Retired advocate Larcius Julius Paullus, cousin of the late dictator, Gaius Julius Caesar, has decided to remain in Athens until the turmoil and chaos of Rome in the aftermath of Caesar's death is resolved. Marcus Antonius, Marcus Lepidus, and Gaius Octavius jointly rule Rome in a triumvirate with each patrician plotting against the others for sole control of the Republic. While enjoying the Athenian climate, he receives s a cryptic missive from Alexandria. A past acquaintance is dead Cleomenses, a wealthy Alexandrian with connections with the leaders of Rome. is killed by a deadly snake, and Larcius is asked to come to Alexandria to solve his death.
