Publisher's Synopsis
By presenting a detailed case study of Italian national-state policies and state-local relationships, this book analyses the domestic impact of the reform of EU regional and cohesion policies in the 1990s. - - On the background of recent trends in European policy integration, the book focuses on how the 'Europeanization' of policy making and the development of transnational policy discourses affect relationships between national and supra-national institutions. In doing so, it points in particular to new factors of policy reform and institutional change emerging in response to external pressures on nation-state structures. - - The book addresses key features of processes of Europeanization, such as adaptation and change in domestic institutions and their variation across policy sectors, pointing to the need to combine institutional analysis with theoretical perspectives - such as multi-level governance and regulation theories - that contribute to understanding the emergence of new forms of institutional innovation and the changing dimensions of territoriality involved.
