Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist novelist, literary critic and playwright, also known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly from 1871-81 having previously served five years as assistant editor. This story was first printed in the Atlantic Monthly in 1875 during Howells' editorship but was not published in book form until 1921, the year following his death. With an introduction by the author's daughter, Mildred Howells.
