In 1995 the United States Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released the First Responder: National Standard Curriculum. This student text is the first for First Responders that embraces sound educational principles and follows the format developed for all DOT National Standard Curricula and it aims to teach First Responders to assess and care for ill and injured patients with minimal equipment. Appendices have been included at the end of some chapters to teach students who have access to some emergency equipment how to properly use this equipment for patient care.
