Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Monsieur Pinson
Lucien biabt was born in 1829 at Versailles. While still a young man he sailed for Mexico, where he devoted himself to the study of natural science, and became a member of the Mexican Commission under the Emperor Maximilian. After twenty years' residence abroad he returned to his native country, and wrote interesting descriptions in various periodicals of journeys made in Mexico and South America. These articles showed that their author was not only a keen Observer of nature and men, but endowed too with considerable literary power and artistic instinct. These qualities were further revealed in a series of novels, the merit of which lies less in the novelty Of the plot or develop ment of the characters, than in the admirable descriptions Of foreign ways and manners, and Of men in regions where the axe of civilisation had not.
