Publisher's Synopsis
Geotechnical design codes worldwide have been migrating towards reliability-based design (RBD), and the new informative Annex D on "Reliability of Geotechnical Structures" which has been written into the fourth edition of ISO 2394 in 2015 suggests that the characterization of model uncertainty is a critical element of the geotechnical RBD process.
This book characterizes the model uncertainties in limit state design of foundations based on a global load test database and illustrates the consideration of model statistics in a simplified or full probabilistic format of RBD. The database provides information on the foundation (dimension, material, and installation or construction methods), site or soil investigation, and load test results. It offers a web-based system which integrates the database, interpretation methods for the failure load, and transformation models for soil engineering parameters, and which enables practitioners and researchers to evaluate in a rational way the model uncertainty for a given design model, simulate load-settlement response of foundations, and perform RBD in a simplified or full probabilistic format with or without site-specific load tests. This book is intended for engineers and researchers who are interested in the practical applications of reliability or risk analyses rather than in the intricacies of the underlying mathematical theories.
