Excerpt from Minority Report of the Committee on Agriculture, Recommending a Geological Survey of the State: With a Bill for That Purpose
The order of the earlier surveys, as given by President Ed. Hitchcock at the in auguration of the New York State Geological Hall, August, 1856, was as follows Albany and Rensselaer counties, 1820; North Carolina, latter part of 1820; Region of Erie Canal, 1823; South Carolina, 1828; Massachusetts Trigonometrical and Geol 1830; Tennessee, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and European' surveys, all were subsequent. New York began in 1836.
