Publisher's Synopsis
Miles Albert Tinker was a professor at the University of Minnesota for over 30 years as he studied a range of typographical elements offering the best typographical environment for reading. He began this quest with study of psychology in 1922, progressing through reading (1926), eye movements and typography (1928), and finally, illumination (1932). His best known book on typography is The Legibility of Print (1963). He continued study in these areas throughout his career until his final book on reading in 1965, Bases for Effective Reading. Present day researchers can easily adapt Tinker's work into study of the effects of typography on reading in terms of both todays research methods, especially in terms of today's illumination environment with transmitted light from smartphones and computer screens. Tinker set the stage. Modern researchers can benefit from study of his work. He would like that.
