Publisher's Synopsis

The theme of microphenomena, which is the subject of this proceedings volume, is at the very heart of the study of composite materials. This book concentrates on the microscopic scale of the study of composites by focusing on microphenomena and on microcomposites. Engineering applications of these unique materials induces them in a sequence of microprocesses that determine their global behaviour. Only by thorough understanding of each of these microprocesses and their mutual interactions can the necessary engineering and design decisions be made. In particular this book focussed on a number of related sub-themes including: the "in-situ" statistical distribution of fibre strengths as affected by the matrix properties. In each case an attempt is made to evaluate the implications of the microphenomena on the performance of the composite material being discussed.;This volume contains 37 of the papers presented all of which have been peer reviewed to the high standards of the journal, "Composites Science and Technology". It should be of interest to all materials scientists and engineers concerned with the latest developments in the structure and properties of composite materials.
