Publisher's Synopsis

The growing interest in and use of microcomputers in the humanities and social sciences is the subject of this book. It investigates the myriad issues associated with the use of microcomputers in universities, colleges and other educational institutions, (with examples from UK universities illustrating the text), extending beyond the traditionally computationally intensive fields.;Dividing their assessment of microcomputer use into areas (archaeology, classics, English language and literature, geography, history, law, linguistics, modern languages, psychology, sociology), the authors explore what is known about the use of microcomputers in the humanities in the available literature. This is followed by a resume of the introduction, use and future prospects of microcomputers in the humanities based on a survey of 236 humanities and academics, together with discussion of the results of their study. Finally, they recommend guidelines for deciding policy at university, departmental, and individual levels.
