The cartridge adopted and ordered to be made was the martin center-fire, the percussion composition being held in the cavity of a straight bar of tinned iron pressed closely against the head of the case. Although not then in its perfected state, the arrange ment gave undoubted evidence of great superiority, and its subsequent success has proved the wisdom of its adoption by the Department.
