Publisher's Synopsis
This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop sponsored by the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons that explored the merits of metal on metal prosthesis in total hip arthoplasty. The workshop brought together a multidisciplinary, international faculty to analyze data from work done during the years, and to re-evaluate metal on metal in light of the recent advances in metallurgy and implant design.;The book presents consensus and divergent views from the workshop and offers recommendations regarding the future application of metal on metal total hip replacement. Key issues addressed include clinical evaluation of older and newer prosthesis designs; requirements for future evaluation of designs; and biologic aspects such as implant retreival, animal or "in vitro" testing of the effects of metal, molecular biology of metal/cell interaction, and ion levels.
