Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life, Character, and Labours of the Rev. John Smith, Late of Sheffield
This feature of character must be constantly kept in mind, or otherwise confusion will arise. If such a man is measured b other men, he will be found unlike them; and will be b amed on account of the deviation, unless it is recollected that he professes to receive the law fromgod's own mouth, and simply to follow the inspirations of a sanctified nature. This is a rare thing when the person in question belongs to a class; is one of many; is expected to walk on the same line with them is drilled under the common discipline and is required to move in the same round of duties. A Minister in these circumstances is in infinite danger of satisfying himself with the current requirement; doing neither more nor less than others; sinking to the common level; and wearing out his existence in the midst of the common-place engagements of his vocation; it may be with the approval and plaudits of his compeers, but making no impression during his life, and lea no trace of his footsteps when dead.
