The hi hest ground is over the Charnwood Forest district, which at ardon Hill attains an elevation of 912 feet above the sea. At the foot of these hills, which rise abruptly, there is an extensive plain gradually declining from about 600 to about 400 feet above the sea, which is deeply cut into by the numerous small streams intersecting this latean. In the western half of the map, between the two Coa fields, where the Drift has been denuded, the plateau-like character has been destroyed, and sharp escar ments are formed by the harder beds of the Permian, Bunter, an Coal-measure sandstones.
