Publisher's Synopsis
Hugo Bergstrom was born in London in 1928, the second son of the opera singers Carl Bertram and Harriett Harcourt (stage names). Hugo's mother died when he was two, and his father and grandmother then looked after him. In 1935, Hugo was sent to the Actor's Orphanage in Langley. At the onset of war, most of the boys were evacuated to America, where Hugo continued his childhood. This is his fascinating account of his orphanage years. A mischievous little boy, he was always in trouble and regularly had his bottom caned. It is a true tale of adventure, and of children coping with pain and joy, laughter and tears.
