Excerpt from Memoirs of Anna Maria Wilhelmina Pickering, Vol. 1: Together With Extracts From the Journals of Her Father, John Spencer Stanhope, Describing His Travels on the Continent, and His Imprisonment Under Napoleon
Mr. Spencer kept a pack of hounds at Can non Hall, and hunted the country regularly. There is a fine portrait of Walter Spencer Stanhope by Rey nolds, in a group of members of the Society of Dilettanti. The date of the picture is 1776, and the other figures in it are Sir W. W. Wynne, Sir J. Taylor, Mr. Payne Galway, Sir William Hamilton, Mr. Richard Thompson, and Mr. Smith of Heath. They are sitting and standing round a table, on which there is an ancient vase, apparently under discussion. The picture is the pro perty of the Society, and is, at present, in their rooms at the Grafton Gallery. It has been engraved.
