Publisher's Synopsis

Memoirs of Service Afloat, During the War Between the States is a two-volume memoir written by Raphael Semmes, a Confederate naval officer during the American Civil War. The second volume, published in 1869, continues Semmes' account of his experiences as captain of the CSS Alabama, a Confederate commerce raider that sank or captured over 60 Union merchant vessels. Semmes describes the Alabama's battles with Union warships, including the USS Kearsarge, which sank the Alabama off the coast of France in 1864. He also discusses the political and social context of the war, including the debate over states' rights and slavery. The memoir provides a firsthand account of the Confederate navy's operations during the Civil War, as well as Semmes' personal perspective on the conflict. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
