Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Memoir of the Late Samuel Breck, Vice-President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania: Read Before the Society
In obeying the call with which you have honored me, I can only hope to express sentiments such as those once entertained personally for your departed associate by his friends, and now cherished for his memory. The invitation carries such a desire natur ally along with it, and its acceptance is a pledge of performance accordingly, not without misgivings as to the satisfactory execution of it. One of the effects of a Society like yours is the cultivation of closer acquaintance, and hence of mutual good feel ing and regard. You come together not merely to acquire and diffuse knowledge of a particular kind, but in the acquisition and diffusion of it you pro mote a friendship resulting from the joint exercise of a common good.
