In every town of size we have groups of good men, who, by dominating the profession, by great professional activity, by diplomatic interest in pub lic and institutional affairs, and by numerous other well laid plans, gain desirable and in some cases large incomes. These men I do not expect to help. Indeed, some of the elect ones may enjoy no little amusement at my expense. It is to laugh! Or, perchance, to scorn. Of these I ask nothing; to them I offer nothing.
There is, however, the average doctor, the earnest, honest fellow out of college from two to ten years, whose income has failed to meet expenses; who by every possible effort has tried to do good work, and to gain and keep a clientele; whose ability and character are worthy of respect, yet who, in spite of all those qualities and conditions which should win the smile of Dame Fortune and gain approval, sees less hope of money success each year. Some of the good fellows go on from year to year, throughout a long career, never having a day of financial independence, and with the one consoling thought that medicine is a service, not a business, and that its success is not expressed in dollars and cents.
