Excerpt from Measures of Positions and Areas of Sun Spots and Faculae on Photographs Taken at Greenwich, Dehra Dun, and Melbourne: With the Deduced Heliographic Longitudes and Latitudes, 1878-1881
One of the objects of the Solar Physics Committee since its appointment in 1879 has been to obtain a complete daily record by photographs of the Sun's surface. A general cata10gue of existing solar photographs and drawings, extending from the year 1832 to 1877, was drawn up by Professor Balfour Stewart and Dr. Warren de la Rue, and published as an Appendix to the first Report. The Committee resolved that, as from the beginning (if 1878 the records were more complete and continuous, they should be grouped in a separate series. Daily photographs of the Sun had already been commenced by order of the Government of India, under the surveyor-general at Dehra Dun, N. W. Provinces, the photographs being transmitted to Mr. Lockyer for reduction. The continuity of the record, however, was interrupted by the sudden death of Sergeant Meins, r.e., the operator who was sent from this country after having been trained at Chatham and South Kensington. A successor was subsequently appointed, and since that time there have been very few days on which no photographs were taken if the Sun were visible. Still, in July and August in each year the record was broken on account of the rainy season. The Indian photographs are now being taken by C. F. Guthrie, under the direction of J.
