Publisher's Synopsis

The papers in this volume provide a sample of some recent trends in psychology, namely the steady increase in the application of mathematical and computing techniques in most areas of psychology and also a continued interest in the development of psychological theories of some generality. Several papers are included which describe recent advances in the use of parallel distributed connectionist models of human information processing. If successful, such models constitute an important theoretical development in cognitive psychology and serve as an interface between progress in neuroscience on the one hand, and the development of intelligent machines on the other. Each section contains important statements by leaders in these fields from Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, including critical evaluations of current developments - brings together contrasting views about the importance and adequacy of various formulations and reports attempts to improve these.
