Ok my return to Paris I found, as usual, a number of pupils awaiting me. They were from all parts of the world, and yet I could not help remarking that German girls were becoming fewer; in fact, at this moment I had but one from that Empire. * Soon afterwards there was great excitement in Paris. That was on the occasion of the first performance of "Lohengrin" at the Grand Opera, the 16th of September, 1891, much having been said about dynamite and the intention of bad people to blow up the theatre if Wagner's work was brought out there. Under the circumstances I did not feel inclined to be present, bat, curious to know what might happen, my husband and I went as far as the Place de l'Opera as spectators. A mounted company from the Gardes Repnblicain were posted before the opera-house in readiness to charge upon the crowd should they attempt any outbreak, and this mob was composed not only of individuals always ready to profit by a disturbance, but in large part of persons drawn thither by curiOpposition To Wagner's Music In Paeis 279 osity. Besides these cuirassiers, a hundred policemen were stationed round the building, and after a while we thought it prudent to return home, as the disturbance was getting serious. Indeed, several persons were arrested, the newspapers the next day'mentioning as many as five hundred, but the performance took place as advertised. It was not until the 21st of September that we were able to be present at a performance of "Lohengrin," and it was the third representation....
