Bookseller Notes
A charming compilation of quotations on the month of April, beginning with Geoffrey Chaucer ('Whan that Aprille with his shoures sote') and ending with Vita Sackville-West ('So I came through that April/ England, moist/ And green in its lush fields', from 'The Land'), and including numerous entries from Shakespeare (joined by a couple of other Elizabethans), Keats, Robert Bridges, A.E. Housman, et al. (including much 'Anon.'); it omits the less enthusiastic evocations of Eliot and Forster, and shows the month to be perhaps uniquely well-served by poetry.Tanner's birthday was 17th April - that of the recipient, Ralph Jeffery, for whom we can infer this was a gift on that occasion, presumably April 23rd. Jeffery, based in Liverpool, was a colleague of Tanner - Staff Inspector of Art and Design.
