Owen Rutter was a partner in the Golden Cockerel Press when he wrote this unpublished account of Sir James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, which follows the dynasty up to the present ruler, Charles Vyner Brooke. Rutter had himself lived in the region whilst serving with the North Borneo Civil Service prior to the First World War - his time there the basis for numerous books, including regarding its history and folk-tales, as well as a novel based on Brooke ('The White Rajah', 1931) and a collection of his letters (1935). The present work begins with a 1p. synopsis, then proceeds to recount some notable episodes from Brooke's life, endorsing the Brookes' near-century of rule as one conducted 'for the benefit of its own people and not for the advantage of its white rulers'.
