Excerpt from Manure Piles and Feed Lots as Sources of European Corn Borer Reinfestation
The fact that conditions existing. In Silos resulted in the destruction of all corn borer larvae put therein, led to the suggestion that Similar results mightbe obtained by mixing infested material with manure. This would have been a very simple means of disposal, and, with the possible exception of removing plant remnants from the surface of piles, it would have involved no extra labor on the part of the farmer. Preliminary experiments, however, indicated that the number of larvae escaping from farm manure piles would prohibit the use of such piles as a control measure.
