Recent years have seen wide-ranging economic and political change in sub-Saharan Africa. International pressures, internal disruptions, civil and international wars have had devastating effects on peopleÆs everyday lives. New cleavages have appeared in the wake of democratization and structural adjustment programmes. The contributors to this volume focus on these social and political changes and on how actors on different levels of society try to handle uncertainty.
