Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Man and the Earth: A Simple Reader in Human Geography
You all know that in England it is warmer in summer than in winter. Perhaps you have also noticed that the shadow cast by a stick at noon, when the sun is shining, is not always the same length. On mid-summer day the shadow is the shortest, while the shadow cast by the same stick on mid-winter's day is the longest. If you draw a line the same length as the stick, and another at right-angles to it the same length as the shadow, and then join the ends, you will have a line which shows the direction the rays of light and heat take in coming from the sun to the earth.
