When eighth-grader Scott Gully returns to his hometown, he expects everything will be the same: he'll have the same friends and he'll retain his status as baseball hero. Even though Scott can still smack the ball out of the park, he can't get on the baseball team. Then Scott's best friend, Jonathan, mocks Scott and Scott's dad. When Aunt Em, Scott's closest ally from childhood, falls gravely ill, and Scott's dad seems to be stepping out on his family, Scott hits bottom.
