Publisher's Synopsis
"Making Technology Work" gives an introduction to the philosophy and development of intermediate, or appropriate, technology, and argues that appropriate technology is a global concern. It also describes the work of the Intermedite Technology Development Group (ITDG) set up in 1966 by Fritz Schumacher, the international charity which works with rural communities, promoting the development and practice of appropriate technology for sustainable development.;Intermediate technology is not a new concept. Leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Mao Tse Tung and Julius Nyerere formulated and developed the concept and practiced it in their own countries long before it was "discovered" by people in the North.;The text uses case studies from ITDG's work to describe the use of appropriate technology in the South. Topics covered include micro-hydro power in Peru, food processing in Bangladesh, cycle trailers in India and Sri Lanka, livestock in Kenya and toolmaking in Zimbabwe.
