Publisher's Synopsis

The focus of this book is on the interaction between European Community (EC) and national policy-making, whilst underlining how national traditional political traditions limit progress towards it. Part One introduces the framework for the study of EC institutions, policy-making and policy output. Possible lines of development of the EC are examined - from a system which will have strong supra-national institutions to a Europe composed of two or more divisions. The second part presents empirical studies of sector policies demonstrating varying degrees of Europeification. Transport, energy and the standardization of the telecommunications industry are examined - all prerequisites for the effective functioning of the internal market. Part Three discusses the future economic and political structure of the EC and relates EC developmentsto the broader development of the EC.
