Excerpt from Major Hook's Defense, to the Action or Criminal Conversation, Brought Against Him by Capt. Charles Campbell, and Tried at Westminster: 26th February, 1793
IT will naturally occur to the reader, that if I had had a defence by which I could have proved my innocence, I would have brought it forwards at the trial. In anfwer to this] have to fay, that molt of the material facts of which the prefent defence confifts, were contained in the infirm tions given to my counfel whether all the oh fervations upon thefe facts contained in the fol lowing {heets occurred to them, I cannot pretend to fay. Indeed, I {hould be very much furprifed rif men, even of the talents which my counfel are funiverfally allowed to pofiefs, could embrace in the infiant every thing that might occur 'upon mature confideration of the fubjee't. And Iwould farther remark, that although the arguments and obfervations might not occur at once, it does not 2 follow.
