This guide is for adult language teachers on how to improve retention rates in adult language courses. The problem of language learners dropping out of classes, considered for a long time as inevitable, has become an issue of pressing concern today. As the survival of language courses increasingly depends on student retention, it is no longer acceptable to see classes dwindle. The aim of this book is to contribute to the discussion on how to prevent learners droping out in the first place by exploring: why learners leave a course; considering how to sustain their initial motivation; proposing tried-and-tested strategies to employ at various key times; providing a range of practical ideas; and also offering a series of "troubleshooting" measures to cope with problems and encourage learners to stay the course.
