Garland (1860-1940) was a Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist, poet, essayist and short story writer, best known for his fiction featuring hard-working farmers in the area he termed the "Middle Border - the northwestern prairie states of Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. This collection of eleven stories, first published in 1891, portrays the hardships of agrarian life at the end of the 19th century. With an introduction by W. D. Howells.
