Machines and Dreams was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra for the opening concert of their 1991 'Childhood' Festival, with the first performance given at the barbican Hall, London on 24 January 1991, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.

All instruments are written at sounding pitch (excepting normal octave transpositions).
