The first stage in the manufacture of matches is to peel the timber into thin veneer. As match factories have already existed in India for some years it is rather remarkable that the manufacture of plywood has, up to the present, only been started in one province. In the Opinion of the writer, one reason for the slowness of development in both industries 18 want of systematic research. There appears to have been too much dependence on one or two well known woods and too ready an acceptance Of the Idea that tropical woods as a whole are unsuit able for manufacture into veneer.
