Upasana is known as continuous worship of an angelic presence or god. If you follow a particular god or goddess / a deity to help you in all your personal and complete life cycle then you have to follow certain protocols on which a particular deity will be satisfied and helps by speaking, appearing in dreams and giving some message, making success in business/ career, marriage, service to others, enlightenment etc. Firstly, please do not panic or no fear of worshiping lord Ganesh, Hanuman, Swamy Iyyapa, Lord Shiva or Kaali as these angelic powers will do only good things for us. They won't punish or reject us; because after all we are humans seeking help from angels and god to help us and only, they can. Also, any mantras can be chanted or prayers can be performed anytime anywhere. Only our mind and soul involvement are very important. Touching pooja things/ idols and deities at home or temple, lighting up lamp should be done with ablution (mandatory). For example, if you choose Lord Shiva as your favourite deity and you need his full help then, you have to pray her everyday more than the other deities. You can start with Ganapathy pooja daily after taking bath (at least Om Maha Ganapathye' Namaha - 108 times) or follow the Ganapathy mantras given in this book and then start worship Shiva with Moola mantra, Gayatri mantra, Rudram/ Chamkam mantras or 108 names (Ashtothram)/ 1008 names sahasranama - where Lord Shiva will be pleased and start helping you. This may be continued for 40 to 90 days to take effect where a particular deity or angelic presence to help depending on our mind, body and soul balance. But don't worry as it happens automatically over the period of time. You need one Guru (teacher) for this mostly; if not please keep Lord Ganesh as your guru and start - as guru upadesam is must. There are some necessary things to be followed; but simple! - Better to keep vegetarian diet (Occasionally if you take Non vegetarian during your day/ lunch then fine. But avoid alcohol for sure on pooja days). You may also offer some fruits or milk rice or curd rice (without salt/ but may add sugar -as Neivedyam/ Prasadam) during pooja to Ganapathy or Lord Shiva and have the same for lunch or dinner as per your wish. Dhakshina-Murthy is a characteristic/incarnation of the Hindu god Lord Shiva as a Guru (educator) of all types of knowledge and wisdom. This characteristic of Lord Shiva in to Guru is his incarnation as the supreme or the ultimate awareness, understanding and knowledge. This form represents Lord Shiva as a teacher of yoga, music, wisdom, and giving explanation on the veda-sastras. He is worshipped as the god of wisdom, complete and rewarding meditation. As per scriptures, if a person doesn't have a guru, then they can consider and worship Lord Dhakshina-murthy & Lord Ganapathy as their Guru. Eventually they will be blessed with a human self-realised Guru, if they are worthy enough. Thursday is linked with the planet Jupiter (Guru) - referred as Guruvar or Guruvaaram). Thursdays are considered auspicious to start any educational activities. It is on Thursdays that special worship services are offered to Dakshinamurthy. Some temple traditions hold full moon nights, particularly the night of the Guru Purnima as the appropriate time for worship services to Dakshina-murthy swamy.
