Publisher's Synopsis

Historically-oriented studies of the arms race tend to be written in terms of particular weapons - the origins of the weapon concept, the research and development behind it, construction and deployment histories, and so on. Most such studies pay scant attention to the infrastructure and sub-systems associated with the major weapon systems. In this book the authors take just one sub-system supporting the submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) system, the suite of navigation instruments used by the missile-carrying submarines, and the associated infrastructure of land-based transmitters which supply navigational signals to instruments on board the missile submarines. By studying the navaids used, they are able to draw conclusions about such matters as the possible accuracy of submarine-launched missiles, and the invulnerability and reliability of the sea-based nuclear deterrent of the United States. The navaid that receives the most attention is Loran-C, the most important source of navigational information for missile submarines.;All those interested in peace studies, strategic studies, and military intelligence.
