It's the Mid-1980s, I had been experimenting with the idea for an autobiography in verse-form that would link the growth and development of the city I had lived in since I was 4 with my own personal development and growth. Perhaps influenced by my reading of Williams' Paterson, and greatly taken in by Rexroth's The Dragon and the Unicorn I fired off twenty-five beginning segments and shared them with a few friends and the novelist Gore Vidal who had been a client of mine while I was engaged in my banking career at Merrill Lynch. Gore, while admitting a preference for prose, commented, "I see a poem here with epic proportions and epic hurdles along the way. He smiled. "Good luck with that. You'll need it."
