Martin Moseley Willoughby Powell and Justin Jennings Walbridge Powell were born on May 12, 1970 in the University of Virginia Hospital. During their premature birth, Martin, the first born by 10 minutes, suffered damage in the mid-brain, later diagnosed as cerebral palsy. In i973, he began a novel therapy program known as the Doman/Delacato method of treating brain injured children through the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential. The therapy prescribed that Martin be exercised eight hours a day, which, over the period from 1973 to 1978, required hundreds of volunteers In 1978, Martin entered Charlottesville City schools as the first mainstreamed pupil under the IDEA Act, graduating in 1990. He later attended Piedmont Virginia Community College and earned a BA in Sociology from Mary Baldwin College's Adult Degree Program at PVCC in 2000.
