Excerpt from Literature, Art, and Science, Considered as Means of Elevating the Popular Mind: An Inaugural Lecture, Delivered at the Opening of the Lecture Courses, at the Royal Panopticon, Leicester Square, on Monday, June 19th, 1854
On the occasion of the opening of a series of Lecture Courses, - the first of many which will, I trust, be delivered within these walls, - some explanation may, not unnaturally, be looked for, as to the design which the promoters of this Institution have in view, and as to the position which it is intended that it should occupy by the side of other institutions devoted to the advancement of Literature, Art, and Science. To give that explanation, is a duty which, in consequence of my official connexion with the Institution, devolves upon the humble individual who now addresses you; and this circumstance I must ask you to accept as the only apology I have to offer for presenting myself before you, notwithstanding the painfully vivid conviction which I have that there are many, probably not a few among those now present, who would far more worthily fill this place.
