Publisher's Synopsis
This book comprehensive study of speech variations in an eight-state region (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and eastern Texas). The project encompasses over 5000 hours of taped interviews with more than 1100 individuals in urban and rural areas. Conducted according to subjects outlined in preliminary worksheets, the interviews record respondents' descriptions and expressions of the places, people and objects in their particular locale. The LAGS materials include phonetic transcriptions of the tapes and, in a Concordance, a further transliteration from phonetics into standard English spelling.;The "Technical Index" is a tool for study and mapping, organizing all contrastive information in the LAGS collection in alphabetical and tabulated lists. The lists summarize the contexts of all lexical, grammatical and pronunciation files for computer analysis.;Preceded by a "Handbook" (Volume I) describing the working methods of the LAGS project and the "General Index" (Volume II), the "Technical Index" is to be followed by several volumes of maps and a Legendry. Designed as an integrated research tool, the "Linguistic Atlas of the Gulf States" complements studies already completed for the North Central and Atlantic states.
