When the work was entrusted to me in 1890, there was every reason to suppose that I should be at liberty to begin it very soon. But unforeseen changes caused me to have a larger Share than was intended in completing and editing the Life of Dr. Pusey. Before that work was finished in 1898, other changes had deprived me of much of the leisure in which this book was to have been written and it has been only possible to prepare it as Opportunities arose at long intervals during the last six years.
