A moins d'�tre destin� �la magistra ture ou � l'�glise, il �tait *are d'aller au-dessus de la rh�torique. Ce premier fonds d'instruction sem blait suffisant pour les jeunes gens qui entraient dans la carri�re militaire. L'usage du monde le commerce des hommes, une vie active, l'autorit� alors si puissante de la soci�t�. Le go�t de l'esprit qui y r�gnait, le mouvement de la conversation, venaient ajouter leurs enseignements au fonds commun de l'instruction classique. Il n'en r�sul tait sans doute point des connaissances tr�s - �ten dues, et elles devaient �tre souvent superficielles.
