This volume covers the period July 1954 to December 1957, during which time Nehru visited China, the conference of Asian and African countries at Bandung, where he elaborated the principles of non-alignment, and the Soviet Union. 1956 saw the crises of Suez and Hungary, though in domestic policy, the success of the first Five Year Plan had inspired confidence in the attempt to provide a thrust to the economy.
