Publisher's Synopsis

While beachcombing, two boys, Billy and Jack, discover a bottle full of letters from a young sailor to his sweetheart. The first letter is dated February 12, 1941, and begins the story of two friends trying to enlist. When this fails, they decide to work their passage to Britain to join up there. However, they are forced to serve on separate ships. William, the author of the letters, finds himself onboard the Cadillac loaded with aviation fuel for the war effort, working as a cabin boy. His position allows William access to the officers, where he learns that a spy or, worse, a saboteur is on board. He also discovers a stowaway being protected by the gun crew, who teaches him how to use the ship's antiaircraft guns. Can they find the spy before the ship enters the Air Gap? This section of the North Atlantic was too far from shore for Allied aircraft to protect their convoy from the Wolf Packs. Here, the spy can jump ship and be picked up by a U-boat. Also, why were these letters in a rum bottle?
