Publisher's Synopsis
These letters from the English abbots show the regular communication that existed between the Cistercian abbeys and the mother house; they are the primary material for judging the state of the Cistercians in England in the fifteenth century. And, since only these letters from the English abbots have survived at Citeaux, they are the only evidence for the comparable documents that must have existed from Cistercian houses in other parts of Europe. The collection provides a valuable means of judging the temper of the authorities at Citeaux and of the reforming zeal which animated the abbots in the local provinces. 140 letters, in Latin, edoted with a brief introduction and index.
