Long after the art of government had been so far improved, that tranquillity was maintained and justice administered over all England and the Low-country of Scotland, the Highlands continued to afford a lively representation of the state of England before the Norman Conquest, and of all Eur0pe at the date of the Crusades. As to this day the effects remain of that state of society out of which the Highlands have so recently emerged, or rather as they are at present only in a state of transition, or passage into that situation in which the rest of the island has so long been placed, it becomes a subject of rational curiosity to attend cor rectly to the past and present state of that portion of territory.
